Porsche 911: a name, a silhouette, a legend

In the history of motor sport and the sports car the instantaneous identification between a manufacturer and a car is a rare phenomenon. This feat has been achieved by Porsche with its 911.

The 911 marked the culmination of a design begun by Ferdinand Porsche in 1938 with the first prototype of what would become the Volkswagen Beetle: a coupe with its air-cooled engine installed in the rear overhang (behind the axis of the rear wheels).  

After the creation of a prototype baptised Project T7 in 1959, the Porsche 911 was officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 12th September 1963. For over half-a-century now it has embodied the Porsche image to the point that its nose has been adapted to all the models of the make: coupes (Boxster, Cayman), SUV (Cayenne, Macan) and saloon (Panamera).

In the field of motor sport the 911’s exceptional longevity has led to a raft of extraordinary results whether on circuits, in rallies and in Off-Road events. It has also shone in the Belgian Ardennes with six victories in the Spa 24 Hours (1967-1968-1969-1993-2003-2010). In the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 911 gave Porsche a symbolic anniversary victory as the year marked the 50th birthday of the founding of the make!
