The Ford GT40, a pioneer and a trail-blazer

The Ford GT40 will forever be associated with the 24 Hours of Le Mans in which it scored the first outright victories in the Sarthe by an American manufacturer. But it also had many other adventures.

The GT40 scored four consecutive wins in the Le Mans 24 Hours of Le Mans (1966-1969). In 1967, the GT40 Mk IV became the first car to break the 5000-km barrier and two years later a GT40 was involved in the closest-ever finish (120 metres).

It was also part of other adventures at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. It was a camera car for the two major films dealing with motor sport shot in that period (Grand Prix in 1966 and Le Mans in 1970). In addition, the GT40 raced on all the iconic circuits of that era.

Thus, the GT40 presented in this video (chassis no. 1078) competed on some of the most prestigious tracks in European Motor Sport between 1968 and 1970. Le Mans, of course, driven by Mike Salmon and Eric Liddell in 1968 (rtd), as well as the Nordschleife, Spa-Francorchamps, Zeltweg, Montlhéry and the temporary Vila Real road circuit in Portugal in the hands of some British globetrotters who were also sports prototype experts like Salmon, David Piper and Alain de Cadenet.
