Inaugurated on the 16th of June of 1972, Estoril hosted the Formula One World Championship from 1984 to 1996, the previous Portuguese Grand Prix being held in Boavista (1958, 1960) and Monsanto (1959). This marked a true golden age for the circuit. Who doesn’t remember Ayrton Senna’s winning debut in 1985 at the wheel of his Lotus JPS under heavy rain? Then, Estoril was dropped from the F1 calendar, though it continued to play racing events, including the Le Mans Series by Peter Auto in 2011. The circuit is located in a high quality tourist area, at only 20 minutes away from Lisbon by car.
