It was created in 1966 by the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America), and was first of all called the Trans-American Sedan Championship, then christened the Trans-American Championship the following year and it is now known as the Trans-Am.

The Trans-Am Championship races mainly on road or city circuits and originally pitted series production American coupes like the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, AMC Javelin, Pontiac Firebird and the Ford Mustang against one another. European manufacturers such as Porsche and Jaguar have also shone in the championship.

The car presented here is the version of the Ford Mustang Cobra that raced in the 1990s complying with the regulations of the category known at the time as GT1 and now called TA. It is destined for high-performance cars specifically designed for racing whose bodywork corresponds to the silhouette of an eligible series production model.Only normally-aspirated engines are allowed in the GT1/TA category. Installed in this Ford Mustang in a tubular chassis (also obligatory) is a 5.8-litre V8 producing 750 bhp giving a top speed approaching 320 km/h.

Almost a quarter-of-a-century ago this Mustang was one of the front-runners in the Trans-Am Championship. A similar model driven by Tommy Kendall and prepared by Rousch Racing won three GT1 titles on the bounce.
